Aquarium Cleaning & Maintenance
We recommend cleaning your tank every two weeks to keep conditions ideal, and testing your water weekly to ensure that parameters remain at safe levels for your fish. When cleaning your tank, it is standard to perform a 25% water change by scooping out the top layer of your aquarium water and replacing it with (conditioned) tap water. To clarify: the new water should be treated with a dechlorinator like API STRESS COAT™ water conditioner before being added to your tank. In addition, ensure that you scrape the walls of your tank with an algae scraper (for either glass or acrylic aquariums) as needed to stay ahead of algae growth so it doesn't overrun your aquarium!
Lastly, it may be necessary to syphon your aquarium gravel to eliminate excess waste and uneaten food particles that have gotten buried. Even small amounts of waste can spike ammonia and nitrite levels in your tank, so syphoning is an important part of cleaning.
At API brand, we offer several types of filtration media, tailoring each product to meet the needs of your specific tank. Choose from API BIO-CHEM ZORB™ filtration media, API PHOS-ZORB™ filtration media, and API NITRA-ZORB™ filtration media depending on which water parameters you struggle to control most – BIO-CHEM ZORB filtration media for reducing basic pollutants and waste, PHOS-ZORB filtration media for removing phosphate and silicate and clearing cloudy water, and NITRA-ZORB filtration media for removing harmful nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. Each of these filtration media pouches are rechargeable – simply rinse in warm tap water after 2 months of use, or whenever you notice water conditions beginning to decline.
Whenever fish release waste, ammonia levels will rise in your aquarium, resulting in unsafe water conditions. Other major factors of aquarium pollution include uneaten fish food, which spikes ammonia levels as it decays, and populating a small aquarium with too many fish for the amount of water.
Avoid overfeeding your fish to reduce the likelihood of uneaten food in your aquarium, and change water every two weeks to eliminate waste that your fish have produced. Test your water regularly to pinpoint where your water quality might be suffering, and troubleshoot with a wide range of API products, including AMMO-LOCK™ water treatment, pH UP™ pH adjuster, pH DOWN™ pH adjuster, and others.
Partial water changes are the best way to remove nitrate and other waste from your aquarium. Because they are the most effective means of eliminating toxins from your water, we recommend partial water changes every two weeks, which will entail scooping out 25% of your existing aquarium water and replacing it with clean, properly conditioned tap water. Partial water changes are much safer and easier on your fish than complete water changes, since good bacteria in your tank are healthy (and essential) for your fish.
Fish Problem-Solving
If your fish is darting or scratching against objects in your aquarium, is hovering near the top of the aquarium for air, or has suddenly developed white spots on its body, these may be symptoms of disease. Ich, the likeliest of culprits, is a bacterial infection that is highly treatable with API SUPER ICK CURE™ fish remedy, so be sure to treat as soon as you notice symptoms. Other diseases, such as fungal and parasitic infections, may be treated with other fish remedies such as API PIMAFIX™ fish remedy, API MELAFIX™ fish remedy, or API GENERAL CURE™ fish remedy, to name a few options. Browse our full selection of fish remedies to select one that is best matched to your fish's specific symptoms.
Recovery time depends on how soon you began treating your fish after the disease was contracted, and whether you selected the proper fish remedy to target your fish's specific symptoms. If you have diagnosed and treated your fish correctly, you should notice an improvement in your fish's behavior and appetite within one week. For stubborn illnesses, multiple treatments and doses are sometimes necessary (i.e. PIMAFIX™ fish remedy combined with MELAFIX™ fish remedy can be highly effective for treating stubborn bacterial infections); however, it is important to dose according to the directions on a product label unless otherwise instructed by an API Technical Services representative.
API fish remedies target most symptoms of bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections. However, if your fish has contracted a viral infection, there is no fish remedy that will cure the virus. Much like humans, fish need to cover from viruses on their own, with the aid of treatments like API AQUARIUM SALT and API STRESS COAT™ water conditioner to ease symptoms and expedite recovery time.
Fish gasping at the water's surface indicates a need for oxygen. Increase aeration immediately with air stones or powerheads. High temperature, high nitrite, or high ammonia levels will cause this symptom, so be sure to check all of your water parameters, and if necessary, perform a 25% water change. If the water quality and temperature are safe, gasping is a symptom of disease. Visually inspect the fish for signs of damage or disease.
Injuries to your fish such as open wounds or sores, scale damage, or torn fins should be treated to prevent possible infection. First, observe your fish and their habitat and try to determine the cause of injury. Your fish may be fighting, or could be spawning aggression between potential mates or rivals. The fish may need to be separated quickly to avoid further harm.
If your fish has not been exhibiting fighting behavior, test all water parameters, which are instrumental in keeping your fish healthy and in helping them recover from any potential illness. Next, treat your aquarium with one or more of the following:
-API MELAFIX™ fish remedy for botanical healing of bacterial infections;
-API PIMAFIX™ fish remedy for botanical healing of fungal infections;
-AQUARIUM SALT, if not already in use.
Depending on severity, one or more of these symptoms should be used to adequately treat symptoms.
For white spots that resemble grains of salt on the fins and body of your freshwater fish, treat for Ick, a common parasitic disease, with API SUPER ICK CURE™ fish remedy. Be sure to follow all treatment instructions for this fish remedy.
Water Problem-Solving
Most of the time, when your aquarium seems murky, the simplest solution is a water change. This ensures that any waste or debris causing the poor conditions is eliminated, so you can start with a clean slate. Partial water changes usually mean scooping out the top layer (top 25%) of aquarium water and replacing it with dechlorinated tap water (tip: API STRESS COAT™ water conditioner instantly removes chlorine and chloramines from tap water, making it safe for your fish). You should also siphon your gravel during cleaning to remove any visible particles of waste.
If you can’t make time to clean your aquarium right away, a quick solution for cloudy aquarium water is API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier. ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier clumps tiny particles of waste together in your tank to make them more easily removed by your filter, restoring clarity to your aquarium water. Note that it does not remove harmful chemicals, such as ammonia and nitrite, from your aquarium that may be an underlying cause of cloudiness and poor conditions. Combat these toxins using API AMMO-LOCK™ water treatment, or simply perform a partial water change if ammonia is high upon testing.
It is essential to test your water at least weekly to be sure that your conditions are safe for fish. We recommend API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT or API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT to quickly and effectively test your freshwater or saltwater aquarium conditions. An even quicker option is API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS, which are easily dipped in water and compared to a color chart to analyze results.
If your test results show high ammonia but you aren’t able to do a partial water change right away, dose your aquarium with API AMMO-LOCK™ water treatment. This product converts poisonous ammonia into a non-toxic form, making your aquarium a safer environment for fish until you can perform a partial water change.
The odor may be caused by food waste from overfeeding, or even a dead fish or snail that went unnoticed. Be sure to perform a partial water change or filter cartridge change if necessary, and test ammonia and nitrite levels to confirm that water is safe. Lastly, use API BIO-CHEM ZORB™ filtration media to remove odors from dirty aquarium water.
Pond Startup
When reestablishing an existing pond at the beginning of pond season, or when starting a new pond, you should first ensure your pond water is treated properly and is free from debris and dirt. If restarting a pond for the season, change 15-25% of the water to reduce any waste that has built up over the winter. To make new tap water safe for fish, treat with POND STRESS COAT™ water conditioner to eliminate harmful chemicals. Always use a pond conditioner whenever you are adding water to your pond.
For a fast and effective algae control, use API POND ALGAEFIX™ algae control in ornamental ponds with no outflow. API POND ALGAEFIX algae control effectively controls green water algae blooms, string or hair algae (Cladophora), and blanketweed (Oedogonium) in ponds containing live plants and fish. This fast-acting treatment controls algae growth, the formation of new algae, and helps resolve algae problems. Dose every 3 days until algae is controlled. Once algae growth is under control, add one dose per week. Weekly doses will control algae growth and reduce pond maintenance.
If you notice a build-up of algae and sludge or other debris in your pond, use API POND ECOFIX™ SLUDGE DESTROYER™ bacterial cleaner to break down waste and increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen in your pond. The result is cleaner, clearer water and a healthier ecosystem for your fish.
Feed your fish API POND FISH FOOD or API COOL WATER FOOD 2-3 times a day, only as much as they can eat within 5 to 10 minutes. Do not overfeed fish, as uneaten food will quickly turn to waste and spike ammonia in your pond water.
Adding the right number and size of fish to your pond is important. Adding too many leads to poor water quality and health problems. This is especially true in an unfiltered pond with little or no aeration. A general rule for success is to stock your properly filtered and aerated pond with 3-4 inches of fish for every square foot of pond surface area.
Root-bound plants should be divided and re-potted. Aquatic plants need the right nutrients for growth and flowering, and AQUATIC FOOD TABLETS will provide these essential nutrients to potted plants such as water lilies and lotus.
Pond Winterizing
As long as your pond does not freeze to the bottom and an air hole is provided somewhere on the surface of your pond, your fish will survive the winter by hibernating at the very bottom of your pond. You'll want to invest in a pond aerator or de-icer to maintain an oxygen hole in any ice that forms.
Remove any excess debris that has formed at the bottom of your pond with a plastic rake, net, or other device that will not damage the liner or fish in your pond. Your fish will become mostly inactive when water temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so you should also stop feeding them around this time. Once the weather turns freezing, your fish cease to digest Koi food as they would in temperate weather.
No! Your pond will freeze and thaw in the spring like other bodies of water. Prior to the first extreme temperatures of the season, do take some time to prune any yellowing leaves from your plants, and remove any waste and debris that has fallen into your pond so that your water will be clean and ready for the spring in a few months!
Keep your pond at least 3 feet deep to allow plenty of room for your fish at the bottom during colder months.
Turtle Keeping
Turtles need both land and water to live, so it's recommended that you keep about 75% of the aquarium filled with water for your aquatic turtle. A general rule of thumb when preparing your turtle's habitat is 10 gallons per inch of turtle (remember that as your turtle grows, it will need more space).
Keep in mind that in addition to lots of water, your cold-blooded turtle needs a small, dry area to rest and bask under a heat source. It's recommended to keep the basking temperature between 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit with proper lighting that imitates natural sunlight. Your lighting choice should produce UVA and UVB rays and be on for 10-12 hours per day. It's recommended to use timers to set a naturally-occurring cycle.
It is essential that your turtle get the proper nutrition it needs to grow and remain healthy. We recommend a high-quality source of protein, such as crickets, mealworms, or waxworms to keep your turtle strong. A vegetable or plant source is also important for balanced nutrition with natural vitamins and calcium, so once a week, feed your turtle 1-2 teaspoons of dark, leafy greens, such as kale, collards, or mustard greens.
When starting a new turtle tank or changing your water, it is necessary to use a water conditioner that will eliminate harmful chemicals, such as chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals, from your tank. API® TURTLE WATER CONDITIONER makes tap water safe for all aquatic reptiles and amphibians by neutralizing the chemicals commonly found in tap water. This treatment works instantly to dechlorinate aquarium and/or vivarium water, so you can start enjoying your underwater world right away.

- Can API ALGAE EATER WAFERS be used in a tank containing shrimp and snails without causing any adverse effects?
- API ALGAE EATER WAFERS will not harm your shrimp or snails, but they will need a different food source to meet their nutritional needs.
- How does the API VACATION PYRAMID FISH FEEDER work?
- API VACATION PYRAMID FISH FEEDER should be used as a temporary substitute for daily feeding for your fish while you are away on vacation. This block, which contains a highly nutritious formula, is designed to slowly release the proper amount of food to your fish each day you are gone. This eliminates the risk of friends or neighbors overfeeding the fish, which can lead to harmful ammonia spikes in your tank. This particular feeder lasts up to 14 days, but may pollute water if your tank is left completely unattended for this length of time. Use as directed.
- How long does API VACATION PYRAMID FISH FEEDER last?
- The API VACATION PYRAMID FISH FEEDER is designed to last for 14 days; however, this does not mean that your fish can survive without a water change for 14 days. A fish that is eating is still producing waste, and waste builds up over time. If you must use the feeder block for the full 14 days, it is important that a water change occurs at the 7 day mark. This should be a 25% water change (or 50% if it is a tank under 10 gallons) in order to clear out built up waste from them enjoying the block. Remember, a fish tank requires more maintenance than feeding in order to stay happy and healthy for the duration of your vacation. API VACATION PYRAMID FISH FEEDER is a tool that can be used to make things easier when going on vacation, but it is not the only thing that is needed for the fish to survive and thrive if the vacation is a long one.
- What does API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier do?
- API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier clears green or cloudy water in freshwater aquariums by clumping small particles together into larger pieces, so they can settle to the bottom of your aquarium to be siphoned out, or easily removed by the filter.
- Is API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier safe with fish and plants?
- Yes, API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier is a safe product for both fish and plants.
- Why can’t API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier be used in marine aquariums?
- In water with a high mineral content, such as the water found in marine (or saltwater) aquariums, API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier will not clear cloudiness and could even make it worse. However, API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier will not cause any harm to fish or marine plants.
- Can API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier be used if I have added salt to the water in my freshwater aquarium as part of a supportive treatment for fish?
- Yes, a low level of salt in the water, as is typically the case with freshwater aquariums, is not a problem with API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier. However, API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier does not act as a healing treatment for fish like aquarium salt. Its primary purpose is for aquarium cleanliness and clarity.
- Will API ACCU- CLEAR™ water clarifier clear the cloudiness caused by bacterial blooms?
- API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier will help to clear the cloudiness caused by bacterial blooms, but does not address the underlying cause. As a result, the cloudiness will come back quickly unless the main cause of bacterial blooms is treated.
- Can I repeat the dose of API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier if the cloudiness persists?
- API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier can be dosed again after 24 hours. However, further doses should not be added after this, as repeated doses will actually make cloudiness worse. API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier can be dosed once a week as a routine treatment to help keep water clear, but if cloudiness persists, you may want to perform a 25% water change.

- Why test pH?
- pH is the measure of acidity in your water. A pH reading of 7.0 is neutral, a pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline, and a pH lower than this level is acidic. It is important to keep your aquarium at the appropriate pH level to ensure optimal water quality for your specific fish species, as different types of fish require different pH levels for their habitats. API® FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT will enable you to test the pH levels in your water as often as needed!
- Why test for Ammonia?
- Fish continually release ammonia directly into the water through their gills, urine, and solid waste. Uneaten food and other waste also add ammonia to the water. A natural way that your aquarium handles this ammonia is through the biological filter, or natural aquarium cycle. However, as with any natural processes, imbalances can occur. This is why it’s important to regularly test for the presence of ammonia, which can spike unexpectedly in your aquarium. As soon as it is detected, ammonia should be removed, otherwise it will damage your fish’s gill membranes and harm their respiration, which can eventually result in fish death. Even small amounts of ammonia stress fish, suppressing their immune systems and increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks. You can remove ammonia from your tank by performing a partial water change, and by dosing with a solution specifically designed to treat ammonia. Test frequently for high ammonia using API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT.
- Why test for Nitrite?
- Testing for the presence of toxic nitrite is essential, so that if it is detected, steps can be taken to remove it. If left untreated, nitrite in the water will hinder normal fish respiration, eventually leading to fish death. Even small amounts or low levels of nitrite stress fish, suppressing their immune systems and increasing the likelihood of disease, which is why it’s important to test for nitrite using API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT. You can remove nitrite from your tank by performing a partial water change.
- What does the FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT test for?
- The FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT measures pH, high range pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in your freshwater aquarium.

- Yes, pH UP™ pH adjuster can help to increase KH.
- What do API PROPER pH™ powders do?
- API PROPER pH powders are pH buffers. They set the pH of aquarium water at a particular level, and also function as a dechlorinator. This means no additional dechlorinator is needed when using these products to treat water.
- I used API PROPER pH™ and my water has gone very cloudy. Is this normal, and is the cloudiness safe for my fish?
- The cloudiness that can be caused by API PROPER pH powders is harmless. It usually settles on its own in 24-48 hours, but the use of API ACCU-CLEAR™ water clarifier may be used to improve it. This cloudiness occurs when API PROPER pH powder is in used in water with high hardness levels, and is caused by the hardness minerals coming out of the solution. To avoid hazy water, we recommend reducing hardness levels to 100 ppm CaCO3.
- I am trying to lower my water with API PROPER pH™ powder, but it remains high. Why is this?
- Normally, one dose will set the pH. However, some tap water sources used in freshwater aquariums are very hard or alkaline and are strongly buffered at pH 8.0 and higher. In this case, it may require two doses of API PROPER pH™ powder to overcome the natural buffers and set pH to a desirable level. In this situation, it may be advisable to soften the water first.
- Is API PROPER pH™ powder safe with invertebrates and plants?
- API PROPER pH powder is safe with invertebrates, but the powders in API PROPER pH 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5 bind to some trace elements which are needed as nutrients by live plants. Therefore, we do not recommend using these API PROPER pH powders with live aquarium plants.
- Is API PROPER pH™ powder a phosphate buffer?
- API PROPER pH 8.2 is a bicarbonate and carbonate buffer, and contains no phosphate. API PROPER pH 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5 are phosphate buffers. Phosphate buffers are the most reliable buffers for freshwater aquariums. They are non-toxic to fish and easily “lock in” the pH for extended periods of time.
- Do phosphate buffers stimulate algae growth?
- No, phosphate buffers combine with essential trace elements, like iron, causing nutrient deficiencies. PROPER pH™ 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5 should not be used in aquariums where algal growth is desirable.
- Will API PROPER pH™ powder increase carbonate hardness?
- Carbonate hardness, also known as “alkalinity” and “KH,” is the level of bicarbonate and carbonate ions in water. The KH level is also a measurement of water’s ability to resist pH change. API PROPER pH 8.2 contains bicarbonate and carbonate buffers, and will directly increase carbonate hardness. API PROPER pH 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5 contain no carbonate hardness, but will cause a spike in KH as measured with KH test kits. These kits work by acidifying the water in the test tube, drop by drop, with a test reagent. When the water sample is adequately acidified, a color change occurs in the test tube. This is called the “end point.” The number of drops of test reagent required to acidify the sample (causing a color change) indicates the level of KH. Phosphate buffers strongly resist pH change, and will be measured just like bicarbonate and carbonate buffers. Therefore, API PROPER pH 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5, will cause an increase in KH measurements.

- What is Carbonate Hardness (KH)?
- Carbonate hardness, also known as alkalinity, is the measure of carbonate and bicarbonate concentrations dissolved in water. These minerals are present in municipal, well, and bottled water. The level of carbonate hardness in tap and bottled water depends on the source of the water and the treatment processes it has undergone. Carbonate hardness helps stabilize pH in the aquarium. An aquarium with a low KH level will tend to be acidic. Aquariums with very low KH are subject to rapid pH shifts if not monitored carefully. Water with a high KH level usually has a high pH.
- What is General Hardness (GH)?
- General hardness is the measure of calcium and magnesium ion concentrations dissolved in water. These minerals are present in municipal, well, and bottled spring water. The level of general hardness in tap and bottled water depends on the source of the water and the treatment processes it has undergone. Hard water is high in calcium and magnesium, while soft water is low in these minerals.
- Are high nitrate levels harmful to fish?
- High nitrate is harmful to fish, but is significantly less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. Effects of high nitrate levels are more gradual if parameters go untreated – fish will eventually lose their appetite and grow sluggish and inactive over time.
