Spotlight Fish: Goldfish
Goldfish are among the most popular of household fish. In fact, it has been stated that goldfish tend to be the first fish for aquarium owners. Most goldfish are hardy and easily kept.
Goldfish are known as the introduction fish to the fish keeping hobby. They are hardy fish and fun to interact with. Goldfish can live a long time if taken care of properly. A common misconception with goldfish is that they can live in a bowl or small aquarium. Throughout fish keeping they have been kept in small amounts of water at stores or carnivals. When they are kept in small volumes of water, it greatly impacts their lifespan, health, and overall growth. One adult goldfish requires 30 gallons for themselves!
Goldfish care
It is acceptable to start with the minimum of 10 gallons when first getting the goldfish. As the goldfish becomes larger, they will need to be upgraded to a larger tank or put in a pond. The main reason for the need of large space is goldfish produce more waste compared to other fish. This extra waste production makes the water quality toxic faster.
It is recommended to frequent water tests using the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT to ensure good water quality. If any of the parameters are elevated, a water exchange of 25-30% is advised along with the use of API GOLDFISH PROTECT and API GOLDFISH AQUARIUM CLEANER with every water exchange.
Nutrition
Goldfish are known to be overfed! They are scavengers and opportunistic eaters! Be careful if you have any live plants because goldfish love to eat them. We would recommend starting the Goldfish with API Goldfish flakes. As the fish becomes larger, API Goldfish pellet would be appropriate for their size.
Goldfish are bright and fun to watch fish for your aquarium but need some special care. It is important to gear the needs of the fish for its full-size potential. This will help the fish live a longer and happier life.
