Controlling Algae in Your Pond

Algae grows in the presence of sunlight when there are excess nutrients in pond water that algae then feed on.

Below are ways to help reduce algae in your pond.

1. FISH VS. VOLUME OF WATER IN YOUR POND | Did you know one koi fish needs 100 gallons for itself? Also, that adult goldfish need 30-50 gallons each? Often ponds are overstocked from the beginning. Buying too many fish when first stocking the pond could impact the health of the pond months to a year later. Although, those fish start small, they will become full size and the pond will struggle with green or cloudy water. 
    
2. MONTHLY MAINTENACE | Monthly maintenance should include- water testing and observing fish behavior and overall look of the fish to make sure they are healthy even during the winter months. Adding in beneficial bacteria like API POND-ZYME SLUDGE DESTROYER™ and API POND ECOFIX SLUDGE DESTROYER™ (even in cold winter months) will keep the ecosystem thriving with consuming fish waste and organic debris that may fall in the pond.
    
3. Perform spring and fall maintenance including pruning plants around the pond, performing a water exchange (a 25%-30% water exchange dilutes the organic material that feeds the algae plant growth), servicing and cleaning filter and waterfalls and remove debris from the water (skim out the floating debris and siphon the waste from the bottom if possible).
